The string program accepts students of all ages and levels for instruction in violin, viola, cello and bass and offers both the Suzuki and traditional approaches. For children under the age of 10, the string program has determined that the Suzuki method -- with its emphasis on parental involvement -- is the most appropriate and, consequently, the only approach it offers. Prior to enrolling, each student and his or her parent will meet with the program chair so that she may evaluate the child's readiness for instrumental lessons. All parents are required to attend a pre-registration orientation session, which includes a discussion of the required parental involvement in their child's instrumental studies.

All string students take one individual lesson as well as one group class per week. String program faculty members closely monitor their students' progress and will recommend a note-reading class or an audition for one of the School's three orchestras or the chamber music program as soon as a child is ready. These activities, described in the Performance Ensembles and Chamber Music sections of the website, expand a student's social as well as musical horizons and act as an incentive to practice. Weekly Music Hours provide students with opportunities throughout the school year to play for and listen to one another in an informal setting. Special performance events include American Music, 20th Century Music, the Bach Fest and the Stowe C. Phelps Annual Student Concert.

Traditional String Instruction
For children 10 or older, the traditional approach integrates note reading from the beginning of instruction. Teachers adapt repertoire to the needs of each student. Parental attendance at individual lessons is optional, but parents are strongly encouraged to attend performances to help their children keep to a daily schedule of practicing and to check in periodically with their children's individual and group teachers.

Group classes are mandatory for traditional string individual lesson students. The purpose of these classes is to learn repertoire and to review and reinforce musical and technical aspects while having fun playing in a group. Group classes promote friendships and motivate the students to practice and continue their studies.

Note Reading Ensemble
This class is for beginning students, at least 5 years old, who know how to play the violin, have well-established posture habits, but have no experience reading notes while playing. Enrollment requires permission of the chairperson.

Observation (Suzuki method)
All beginning and elementary students are encouraged to observe a lesson of a student at a more advanced level. In this way, parents and children become familiar with the lesson process and with pieces that they will play in the near future.

Additional Opportunities
As students develop their musical skills, they are encouraged to take additional classes such as theory, composition and ensemble. Please visit these sections of the website.

Suzuki String Repertoire Classes
Suzuki repertoire classes are mandatory for Suzuki students and parents. The purpose of this weekly class is to reinforce and review pieces already learned and to develop playing skills and musicality. Repertoire classes also promote the development of friendships and teachers frequently use games to highlight important technical points. Repertoire Class concerts are held twice each year in January and June.
