The piano program welcomes students of all ages and levels, from beginning through professional. The faculty uses a curriculum of progressive levels of achievement and the repertoire studied embraces popular styles as well as appropriate classical repertoire.

Piano Certificate Program
Piano students at Third Street Music School Settlement may choose to participate in the Certificate Program. The Piano Certificate Program recognizes and rewards serious students and provides guidelines for advancement. It seeks to integrate performance, theory and supporting courses with student performance and concert attendance. Thus the program nurtures a sense of community among its participants, encouraging them to strive for excellence, both as individuals and as members of a group. The aim of the Piano Certificate Program is to offer an opportunity for musical growth and to promote a greater understanding and appreciation of music, including:
  • yearly performance auditions with adjudications
  • annual certificates for completion of a level
  • master class by guest artist with certificate awards ceremony
  • workshops by Third Street piano faculty
  • junior half-recital and senior full recital
  • college recommendations for graduating seniors
  • certificate program honors recital
The Piano Certificate Program comprises 11 levels of achievement. The levels are structured with attainable goals so students may pass one level each year. Teachers place students in the program at the appropriate level. Individual students progress at different rates; a teacher may elect to skip or repeat a level according to the student's needs. Requirements become increasingly rigorous, and a student who graduates from the program will have a solid, well-rounded music education.

Special Events: guest artists, studio recitals and weekly Music Hours
Guest artists visit throughout the year and inspire our students with their teaching and playing. Past guest artists include Bruce Adolphe, Seymour Bernstein, Claude Frank, Richard Goode, Joseph Kalichstein, Gilbert Kalish, Jerome Lowenthal and Ursula Oppens. Each spring the piano program plans its studio recitals to provide a performance opportunity for every piano student in the School. In addition, students have the opportunity to be included in piano program recitals throughout the year as well as weekly Music Hours.

The Summer Piano Ensemble Workshop is reviewed under Summer Programs.

The following activities are available to individual/PARTNER PIANO students at no additional charge!
  • Guest artist master classes, weekly Music Hours, studio and department recitals
  • Chamber music ensembles are available to students by audition.

Studio Master Classes
Students of similar age and level meet to perform new works or to present works-in-progress in an informal setting. Class discussions pertaining to musical issues are encouraged as students learn how to listen thoughtfully and share constructive comments. The instructor is present at every class, guiding the discussion and offering feedback.

Students register for 6 classes yearly: 6 Wednesdays or 6 Fridays: dates and times TBA. Please call 212-777-3240 for more information.

Suzuki Piano Repertoire Classes
Suzuki repertoire classes are mandatory for Suzuki piano students. The purpose of this weekly class is to reinforce and review pieces already learned and to develop playing skills and musicality. Repertoire classes also promote the development of friendships and teachers often use games to highlight important technical points. Repertoire classes are scheduled frequently throughout the week.

Observation (Suzuki method)
The Suzuki method believes that children can learn from observing an older child's lesson. Thus, all beginning and elementary students are encouraged to observe the lesson of a student at a more advanced level. In this way, parents and children become familiar with the lesson process and with pieces that they will play in the near future.

The following activities are available to individual/PARTNER SUZUKI PIANO students at no additional charge!
  • weekly repertoire classes, guest artist master classes, weekly Music Hours, studio and department recitals
  • Chamber music ensembles are available to students by audition.
