The guitar program offers a progressive sequence of study for all students. Group guitar (Guitar for Children) is recommended for young elementary school-aged children. In the second year of study, students are encouraged to participate in guitar orchestra, which is offered at no additional fee.

Continuing students and older beginners follow a course of individual study in either classical guitar styles or electric guitar styles.

30-, 45- or 60-minute lessons are available

The program encourages students to participate in the classical guitar performing ensemble or the electric guitar ensemble available at no additional charge. Guitar students are featured in regularly scheduled performances and weekly Music Hours throughout the school year.

Group Guitar for Children
Classes are for children ages 6 - 10 and are scheduled in groups of 2 or 3 based on the following goals:
  1. To foster a high level of enthusiasm, all classroom activities are conducted in an atmosphere of fun, games and ritual that we call "Guitar Club!"

  2. To develop durable child-centered practice habits, a program-wide system of incentive and reward makes early practicing worthwhile.

  3. To teach the complete instrument right from the beginning.
Book I, Secret Code Notation, allows the student to play melodies with no reference to actual pitches or standard notation. Books II and III provide complete musical alphabet information for the entire instrument. Books IV and V complete the teaching of the process with the study of standard musical notation for the full range of the instrument. This develops a strong foundation for continuing guitar study in any style of music.

Classical Guitar
Individual study is based on the traditional classical guitar method, which includes intermediate pieces that bridge the gap between beginning guitar study and traditional solo classical repertoire. Much of the new material is in the form of ensemble arrangements of standard classical guitar literature.

Electric Guitar
Instruction in electric guitar reflects the diversity of modern popular guitar styles. A course of study, designed to meet the student's personal taste, is drawn from the literature of rock, folk, blues, jazz and related styles. Individual lessons are offered in guitar and bass guitar (acoustic and electric).
