Music Instruction Overview

Third Street's staff and faculty are dedicated to giving artistic opportunities to as many children as possible, regardless of ability or career goals. The excellence of its program assures that those with professional aspirations receive preparation for entrance to a conservatory. Students are encouraged to participate in weekly Music Hours, informal weekly concerts, not only as performers but also as audience members. Many students take advantage of the chamber music program to perform great literature written for their instruments in chamber ensembles. Participation in special events and festivals such as American Music Week, the Bach Fest, Honors and Showcase Recitals and the Stowe C. Phelps Annual Student Concert, further enriches students' musical lives.

The music program consists of four activities vital to a child's music education:
  • individual or group lessons
  • theory and musicianship training
  • participation in an ensemble or musical group activity
  • performance
A fifth activity, practice, takes place at home, and is crucial to both progress and student satisfaction.

To broaden students' understanding of music, the School encourages students to enroll in a theory, composition or musicianship lab class. These classes range from the elementary through the advanced and are offered at a reduced fee to students enrolled in individual lessons. Performance ensembles are an important feature of the music program and are offered at no charge to enrolled individual lesson students.
