| School Partnerships MILES (Music Instruction on the Lower East Side) Third Street partners with a number of schools in Lower Manhattan to provide music and, to a lesser extent, dance instruction to approximately 2,400 students. Each program is tailored to the needs of the individual school. Schools may request Music & Movement or group violin instruction on weekly basis for their early childhood classes. Recorder instruction is added in second or third grade. Older classes study instrumental music, chorus or dance. Third Street's newest initiative teaches groups of late elementary and middle school students to play winds, brass and percussion instruments, forming school bands. The children in Third Street's school partnerships have the chance to perform in concerts at least once a school year. The most interested students (ages 6 to 14) from these schools have the opportunity to pursue more individualized instruction in small group classes at Third Street. Wherever possible, Third Street makes a long-term commitment to its partner schools.
