Events Calendar | News |
Throughout the school year, Third Street offers approximately 250 free concerts by students
and faculty to the general public. Student highlights include Chamber Music concerts in
November, February and May; String 'Stravaganzas in January and June; Concerto Night and
BachFest in March; and the Stowe C. Phelps Annual Student Concert in the spring. Two annual
concert series, described below, feature the School's outstanding faculty and accomplished
guest artists.
Most public events take place in the School's Anna-Maria Kellen Auditorium, an intimate
theater-in-the-round with carpeted bleacher-style seating. For more information on any of
our concerts, please call 212-777-3240.

Music in Abe Lebewohl Park
Every summer since 1982, Third Street Music School Settlement and the 10th &
Stuyvesant Streets Block Association, in cooperation with St. Mark's Church-in-the-Bowery,
have presented Music in Abe Lebewohl Park, a series of free outdoor concerts. These eight
programs by professional artists offer a wide spectrum of music, much of which reflects the Lower
East Side's diverse ethnic culture. Concerts take place on eight Thursdays in June and July at 12:30 p.m.
in Abe Lebewohl Park, Second Avenue and 10th Street, in front of historic St. Mark's Church-in-the-Bowery.
In case of rain, performances are held on the portico of the Church.

New Horizons Band
Third Street launched the New Horizons Band in October 2007.
This initiative gives older adults with little or no musical experience
the opportunity to play and perform band music with others. Instruments
include flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet and trombone
or almost any other woodwind or brass instrument. The program
is underwritten by a grant from the Jean & Louis Dreyfus Foundation.

School Partnerships
While Third Street Music School Settlement draws students
from throughout New York, it remains dedicated to serving children from
the Lower East Side. Through the its school partnership program (called
MILES - or Music Instruction on the Lower East Side), local public
school students receive weekly, hands-on instruction in music and dance
during school hours.
MILES includes: Music & Movement and recorder instruction for early
childhood classes; and music and dance instruction for students in
grades four and up - including a new Winds, Brass & Percussion
Initiative. Instruction takes place either at Third Street or in the
public schools. Six- through 14-year-old students in participating
schools are invited to take free after-school/Saturday group lessons or
classes at Third Street.
